Large Animal Services

Two of BCVH's veterinarians offer large animal care. Dr. Amy Hurd cares for horses and Dr. Amy Gregoire cares for horses and small ruminants, such as goats and sheep.

Dr. Hurd has a large amount of experience in equine reproduction. She utilizes manual palpation along with ultrasound examination, laboratory blood tests and hormone therapy to breed horses with natural cover as well as by artificial insemination. Dr. Hurd's pregnancy success rate is over 90%.

Dr. Hurd covers an extensive territory. She sees horses throughout all of Rhode Island and most of Southeast MA.

Dr. Gregoire is a mixed animal practitioner. Her farm animal patients include horses, goats and sheep. She works long hours driving from farm to farm.

Preventive Health Care Recommendations

Horses:

• Annual Rabies Vaccination
• Rhinopneumonitis / Influenza: 1-4 times a year, depending upon the horse's risks
• Tetanus / Encephalomyelitis / Potomac Horse Fever : each year in May or June
• West Nile Virus Vaccination: given annually during early summer
• Strangles: given annually to horses at risk
• Tube or Paste Deworming every 4-8 weeks
